My Obsession With Editing

Hi friends, today I want to tell you about my love for editing, yes,I love to edit my pics,in fact I am obsessed with it.In my opinion if the straight out of the camera photo is good it can be enhanced slightly to make it better or may be best!

Above is the collage I posted for you, which consists of 4 straight out of the camera pics of the same shoot! As far as clicking my dolls are concerned I keep on clicking them unless I get that one knock out shot!;););) We all do that, don't we ?

My photo shoots are never over until my photos are edited and my post production is complete! With digital images I feel each of my images should get my special attention,of course this step comes in only after the final selection of my images. I am talking about all the basic editing tools that are available on each computer, even with a few enhancements here and a few sharpening or cropping there you can achieve amazing result,I won't deny it's time consuming.
I have noticed that depending on the time of the day and my mood I will have totally different effect on my photos,if I sit with the same photo on another day you will find a completely different photo from me.
Each of us has our own way of dealing with a photo!!
Editing is fun,it adds a spark to the photo.Especially with dolls you can achieve amazing result,a simple photo can be made to look spectacular.
Editing of my photos is an extension of who I am and how I feel emotionally at that moment!:)
That's all for now,I would love to know about YOUR way of dealing with a shoot,I am sure I would find something interesting to learn from YOU!!

Love
Pam

  1. Somewhere I remember reading that "a good eye can edit before the shutter opens". You seems to be an embodiment of the quote. The finesse to capture and the art to present it perfect is a skill not many can boast off like you. Keep reflecting your moods, feelings and persona through the wonderful melody of visual delights. Kudos

  2. I totally agree with your, editing a photo usually enhances it, and you've shown right away in this post. And it's true we choose different effects according to our mood! By the way... which editor do you use?

  3. Thanks for your reflections on your creative process. I edit almost all of the images I post to my blog. If nothing else I crop them to enhance the composition. Not every shot fits properly in the standard size frame of the camera. Also since I am working with 1:6 dioramas, sometimes it is not possible to keep the edges or other details that would spoil the illusion out of the image without cropping.

I often use Photoshop to balance the colors and brightness too. Most of the time I use available light and I've been shooting with my iPod for the last six months. It doesn't have fancy exposure and focus features so I have to correct some images.

Sometimes I use desaturation for dramatic effect in photo stories. For example if my story is about a historical time period (I did one about a Tuskeegee airman last year), I will make all the image black and white.

The most fun, however, is using the photo editor to create composite images. Outdoor shoots are fun but sometimes you can't take your dolls and all their paraphernalia on location. By shooting them in "green screen" and then compositing them against a location background, I can create the illusion that they are in all kinds of places.

  4. P.S.

I forgot one more editing trick. I use painting techniques to remove unwanted details like flyaway strands of hair or doll stands.

  5. I totally agree. There are very few photos that I don't edit before I post. I end up cropping most of them and generally mess with the brightness/contrast and the color balance just to give a cleaner feel. Even a little bit of editing can make a photo stand out more.

  7. Hello from Spain: the photos always reflected the mood or the way the photographer sees reality. The camera is always subjective. We never see two identical photos ... Your photos are always very personal. The focus, purpose, perspective, light ... always reflect something of the photographer.. Good topic for reflection. Your photos are very nice and high quality. keep in touch.

  8. Your pictures are really nice. I need to get a photo editing software. I would love to get one where I can alter the emotions of the doll (ie tears, confused raised eyebrows) and add words in bubbles. What is a good software for a beginner? Thanks.

  9. Editing is definitely part of the process but I agreed with Anirban's comment about the eye editing first. I live with two professional photographers (my husband and daughter) and I know they both look at things differently and produce quite different photos from the same subject. They are then quite careful in choosing the photographs they will spend time on editing and uploading. I'm sure you have a lot of fun playing with your photos after you take them.

  10. Hi Pam,
I really love you made a post about this!
Edit photos is actually something I love to do. Pictures are not only memories, but as you stated, feelings, that you can put out "by your eyes" and also everytime shows a little bit of who you are, your point of view or emotions at that point and time.
thanks for sharing some of your passion with us :-)

  11. Photo editing is my most favorite part of photography actually. I want to say that I don't do that much editing to my doll photos, but compared to the average person, that's probably not true. Often I'm compelled to "fix" blemishes or strands out of place because they bug me.

The 2 main things I do to my photos are change the levels because I'm lazy about proper lighting and then I sharpen the image for better clarity. Additionally, because I'm hyper paranoid, I also create a new JPEG to pull the edited photo to so that all geotags and info are removed.

I can tell from your wonderful photos how much you enjoy editing!
